RIVER OAKS ACADEMY presents an evening of wellness. Professionals from a wide array of disciplines will coach teens and adults on effective techniques for healthier living.


Sound bath and Yoga:  Surreina Gallegos Gerbman and Stella Davies

Surreina Gallegos Gerbman’s passion for spiritual practice inspires her classes, trainings and retreats to create an uplifting experience.

She is a YogaWorks Certified E-RYT-500 teacher and assistant trainer, Hypnotherapist, Reiki Master, Sound Healer, Aroma-Touch Practitioner, and specialty teacher of Kundalini Yoga and Y12SR (Yoga of 12 Step Recovery).

Stella Davies is a Healing and Creative Arts Practitioner who weaves her magic as a songstress, passion for Reiki,  and love of sound for healing, into offerings that inspire, enchant  and transform.  She also teaches yoga and has been leading kirtan for 20 years in the UK, Europe and now in the US.

The Wisdom Project: John Horton, MD

The human ability to shift from a stress system to wisdom systems depends upon reflection.

Dr. Horton will cover human evolutionary potential, as well as learning to shift from a stress system to a wisdom system, for health and sanity. He’ll  give essential understandings and practical tools, including inner game tools for reflection.  Other topics include:

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs;

Stress system for survival and safety; The Mammalian brain for social and ego needs vs the Human brain for self actualization.

Mood & Emotion Management:

Marc Weintraub, PhD

Marc Weintraub will help teens to manage their moods and emotions more effectively. It will give them a range of skills related to stress-reduction, emotion regulation and helpful thinking, as well as behavior strategies to help cope with this stressful world. After the presentation ROA will set up a group for teens to practice the exercises that they’ve learned. The group will meet for 9 weeks with 90 minute sessions.

Compassionate Communication: Leina Ball

Leina Ball is a teacher at River Oaks Academy and has been an educator since 1998. She’s a candidate for certification with the Center for Nonviolent Communication and has been working in this area since 2011.

Participants will be introduced to the skills and consciousness of compassionate communication, also known as nonviolent communication or NVC. Explore connecting to yourself and others with more authenticity, less judgement and criticism. Using empathy encourages more satisfying relationships.Compassionate communication enables us to honor and meet all needs.

Meditation: Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center

Meditation fosters inner peace and helps to overcome worry, anxiety or daily  problems. Developing a daily meditation practice will increase inner peace and leads to the authentic happiness we all are seeking.

Tushita Kadampa Buddhist Center, a non-profit organization established within the community for over 10 years, offers a place of spiritual refuge in the Conejo Valley.

Parenting: Sandy McGlynn

Have you ever felt so overwhelmed by parenting that you do or say something that leaves you, and your family, asking, “Where did that come from?”  Do you want to feel more connected, present and patient with your child? Join Sandy McGlynn, ACSW, as she explores parenting in today’s world. Sandy has over 20 years of professional experience working with parents and children.


Chiropractor/ Dr. Ben Griffes

Dr. Ben Griffes, M.A., D.C., is a chiropractor in Thousand Oaks.  He specializes in postural realignment, athletic performance, nutritional counseling and injury repair and prevention.

Dr Griffes will offer a strength test, using a dynometer, and a balance test, to indicate overall fitness. He will also provide handouts about health and posture.

Acupuncturist/Dr. Bruce Pendleberry

Bruce Pendleberry, OMD, LAc, is  a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and Licensed Acupuncturist in the Conejo Valley.

Using Chinese, Korean and Japanese medical systems, his practice includes acupuncture, chinese herbs, lifestyle and dietary changes, cupping, tui na, gua sha, microcurrent and cold laser therapy. He will explain what foods, exercise and strong/weak tendencies must be balanced.

Essential Oils/Doula/Herbal Remedies/

Lauren and Michael Costine

Amaru Life provides healing and nurturing the body, mind and spirit using herbal remedies, essential oils, meditation and nourishing foods.


Lauren Costine, Health Coach and Doula, guides women and their partners through fertility, pregnancy and postpartum period. Michael Costine, a graduate of the Gaia School for Plant Medicine, will educate about nourishing herbal formulas to combat daily stresses and anxieties.

Organic Gardening/Marie Mcclain

Marie's sustainable gardening is committed to providing organic gardening services and education to empower the gardener within you.

Sports nutrition/Jennifer Rau

Jennifer Rau will help your student athlete develop fueling and hydration strategies to perform better, build strength, recover faster, and have more energy.

Henna w/Sara McGuire

Sara McGuire is a longtime practicioner of henna. Henna, the art of Mehndi, is a quick, cost-effective means of self expression.  Learn how to unwind, gain back some sanity and create art with henna.

The Book Booth will help provide some guidance and ideas for those interested in Health and Wellness. A book list will be provided with many books and authors to explore. Sample books are available to peruse.

Gracie Barra JiuJitsu Simi Valley  - Our methods are aligned with the Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Program from Rio de Janeiro, and we teach Jiu Jitsu for all ages and abilities. Students learn to feel safe – not only when they’re at school but also from within -  by developing self-confidence, self-discipline and respect. Through the struggles and victories of the training of Jiu-Jitsu we can become better versions of ourselves.


Clinical Psychologist/Dr. Eynav Accortt

Dr. Eynav Accortt, Ph.D. is a California licensed clinical psychologist specializing in women’s mental health. She is a cognitive behavioral therapist with specialized training in perinatal mental health (pregnancy + postpartum). She will explain what cognitive behavioral therapy is, how it works, and how it might help you or a loved one. She will also teach a few stress management techniques that are particularly effective for prevention of anxiety and depression. She has a private practice in Agoura Hills (www.perinatalmentalhealthcare.com) and conducts research at Cedars-Sinai.
