About the Board

Board of Directors:

Terri Childs

Terri Childs, a 14 year resident of Thousand Oaks, has actively supported public education through volunteer teaching, chairing PTA art programs and serving on several PTA boards. She’s spent the last six years serving on the Board of Directors for Bridges Charter School, including five years as Board President. After receiving her MBA from Southern Methodist University, Terri worked for more than 20 years in high technology marketing and corporate communications. She also graduated cum laude from Pomona College with a BA in Sociology. Terri and her husband Larry have two sons: Jeremy, a recent graduate of Occidental College and now a reporter for the Ventura County Star; and Jamie, a junior at the University of Redlands.

Jennifer Daugherty

Board Member

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Jennifer Daugherty is a thirty-year veteran of the entertainment industry, and is immensely grateful to have served as the Director of Development for both Henry Mancini Enterprises and author Jackie Collins. Dedicating herself to developing, protecting and promoting their brands was a privilege, and working with such generous and prolific talent afforded her the opportunity to spearhead some extraordinary projects. Whether working on the opening of the Walt Disney Concert Hall, developing books/plays/screenplays, creating a commemorative stamp with the United States Postal Service, or putting concerts together at the Hollywood Bowl, KODAK Theatre and Lincoln Center with world-class artists, her job experience has been challenging and diverse. Additionally, she produced 15 theatrical productions and was awarded the Drama Logue Award for Producer of the Year for the critically acclaimed “Catholic School Girls.” Jennifer is proud to have helped grow two non-profit organizations, as well as having worked intimately with Boards ranging from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Music Center, Hollywood Bowl, and Geffen Playhouse.

Hands down, her greatest accomplishment and passion in life is being married to her better half, Nicholas, and being a proud mother to Rowan and Liam. River Oaks Academy has been a tremendous blessing for her family, and she wants to see it continue to excel for years to come. That, combined with her unique skill set and love of collaborating with teams to ensure the success of a shared vision, is why she is honored to serve on the ROA Board.

Denise Filz

Board Member

Denise Filz has been a part of the ROA home-schooling family for seven years. Additionally, she has had the privilege of being an ROA board member for three of those years.

The wonderful ROA program, highlighted by its individualized curriculum, exceptional and supportive teachers, varied enrichment workshops, along with a caring and knowledgeable staff, has fostered a sense of community and belonging that is so very special. It is this type of environment that her son, now a high school student at ROA, has needed, helping him to thrive. Denise cares very much about River Oaks Academy and her goal is to give back to ROA in ways that support its mission and continued success while sharing her experience and knowledge. She has had the privilege to contribute and participate in the activities that led to the establishment of ROA’s Oxnard campus, our WASC designation, our last Charter renewal, and most recently, advocating in opposition to proposed, detrimental charter legislation.

Her background includes a B.A. in Art/Design, a multifaceted experience in the design and communication industries, along with having served on various committees and boards, including serving as a Governor’s appointee to the State Council on Developmental Disabilities/Area Board Nine for six and a half years. She has worked and collaborated with diverse groups of people, including California State legislators, with a focus on K-12 inclusive education.

Dr. Michael McCambridge

Dr. Michael McCambridge has 46 years of teaching and administrative experience at the elementary, middle, secondary, university, and corporate levels. He strongly believes that school is not just a place where children and adolescents acquire cognitive and linguistic skills. It is a place where they acquire beliefs about themselves, strategies for getting along with others, and a perspective about right and wrong. It is this conviction and his ability to integrate the arts across the curriculum that are the foundation for his teaching, research, and the rationale for Active, Collaborative, Transformative teaching and learning (ACT).

Dr. McCambridge is a Professor of Education in the School of Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School of Education at California Lutheran University. In 2008 he was awarded the CLU President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, in 2009 and 2013 was elected as Professor of the Year, and in 2015 he was honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Graduate School of Education.
