COUNSELOR’S CORNER FOR JANUARY 2021
Dear River Oaks Families:
Welcome to 2021! I hope that you all enjoyed a much-needed break over the past two weeks! As challenging as these times have been, please know that the River Oaks staff will continue to assist you in every way possible. I am optimistic that things will improve soon, and I am grateful for the resilience and determination that our River Oaks community has demonstrated over the past ten months.
Here are a few items of interest for our high school families:
Seniors: don’t forget to submit your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon as possible. If eligible, you may use your financial aid for universities, community colleges, and career-oriented schools. Visit https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa for information, or contact your counselor, Richard, for information.
Seniors: Many universities are still accepting applications for admission. However, don’t wait! See your teacher and/or Richard for assistance! In addition, for those of you who plan to attend community colleges in the fall, we will assist you in the application process, which begins this spring.
For all high schoolers: There is still time to register for spring dual enrollment courses at our local community colleges. Colleges begin their semester schedules at various times, so see your teacher as soon as possible for application and registration procedures.
Are you interested in taking a course in the fall through the Ventura County Career Education Center? Offerings will be published soon on the CEC website at https://www.vcoe.org/Career-Education/Career-Education-Center . You will learn about the career-oriented programs available.
Speaking of career courses, our local community colleges, including Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura, also offer a wide range of exceptional programs. Visit this page for more information! https://www.vcccd.edu/career-pathways
River Oaks plans to offer the SAT and the PSAT on our campus in the spring. We were able to do so in the fall, even though Saturday exams were not available to students in our area. Considering the constantly updated advice from our state and local government, we encourage our eleventh graders to register for these official SAT and PSAT offerings, offered for free to our students in a safe environment on our campus. More information will be coming soon.
Finally, although we are not able to meet in person at this time, I am eager to visit with you by Zoom to address your counseling needs. Reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org for appointments!
Here’s to a healthy and safe start to the New Year!
