Important Information for River Oaks Seniors!

 College Information Night

Westlake High School will be hosting the annual Conejo Valley Unified School District College Information Night on Monday, September 24. Our students are invited to attend this informative evening, featuring both a college fair and a variety of workshops on college related topics. It all begins at 4:15 pm with the fair, followed by the workshops at 6:25.  Parking isn’t easy, so arrive early…food trucks will be there!

SAT School Day Testing Coming to ROA!

Once again this year, the SAT will be administered on school days, in addition to the traditional Saturday exams.  River Oaks will be offering the SAT for all interested students free of charge on Wednesday, October 16, at 7:45 am, on the Westlake campus.  This is a terrific opportunity to take the SAT without having to sacrifice a Saturday, and under comfortable conditions right here at your school! Seniors will have priority… registration materials are coming soon! Remember that, for students who want to continue their education at a four-year college or university, most schools require the SAT or ACT.  There are several choices: SAT, SAT with Writing, or Subject Tests. Check with Richard to confirm which is the right test for you.

Please note that we will also be offering the PSAT (the practice test for the SAT) on that same date, October 16.  The PSAT is designed for 11th graders, but younger students may take it on a space available basis.  Be sure to register for the correct test!

Contact your ROA high school counselor, Richard, for further information on college testing:

College Applications!

The college application season is upon us! It is important for all seniors to meet with Richard to begin the application process. Richard is typically on the Oxnard campus on Tuesdays, and in Westlake on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Email Richard for a college appointment, which usually takes thirty to sixty minutes.

Applications for the University of California’s nine campuses are open now at . You may work on the application now, but you cannot submit until November 1. The deadline to submit is November 30th.

Applications for the California State University’s twenty-three campuses will be available on October 1st at . You may apply to a CSU campus any time from October 1st to November 30th.

Both the UC and CSU application websites offer a great deal of information about their many campuses, as well as detailed instructions for completing the applications. And, Richard is available for one-on-one assistance.

For those seniors hoping to attend an independent or out-of-state university, see Richard to determine the application that suits you best. The Common Application houses more than 700 schools, and the new Coalition Application also works for a number of independent colleges. In addition, if you wish to attend a public non-California college, you will probably apply via the system offered by each school.   Finally, Community College applications are typically available in the spring, from March forward. We will assist you with your applications for local community colleges, as well as orientation, placement testing, and course selection to prepare for transfer. It can seem to be a daunting task, but we are here to help!

Scholarships and Financial Aid

As you begin the college application process, it is also important to look for scholarships and financial aid. We will regularly post information about local scholarships that come to our attention. In addition, we recommend that all seniors submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This form, sponsored by the federal government, helps students qualify for grants, loans, and work study opportunities. We recommend that all 12th grade families file the FAFSA, even if you feel you may not qualify under the federal income guidelines.  The FAFSA can be found at  You may file the FAFSA from October 1st through March 2nd.  Now is a good time to open an account and learn what the FAFSA can do for you. Richard will be submitting grade point averages for all seniors to see if you qualify for a Cal Grant, which is free, renewable money that can be used at any California college, including community colleges.  Again, don’t hesitate to contact Richard for assistance.

We have one scholarship that has come to our attention already, thanks to Kathy Jackson:

The Susan Steelman Bragato Scholarship is open to current California charter school seniors. The deadline to apply is September 27, 2019.  You may find information here:

In addition, here are a few sites to help you in the search for money for college: California Student Aid Commission, a good place to learn the ins and outs of the financial aid process; a comprehensive national scholarship search tool.
